How to Distinguish OPP Film from PET Film?

2024-05-13

To differentiate between OPP (oriented oriented polypropylene) and PET (polyester) films, there are several methods you can use:

1. Combustion characteristics:

OPP: There is no smoke when burning, the melt drips, and emits an odor similar to burning paraffin.

PET: The flame continues when burning, and the film may break into pieces, accompanied by a pungent odor.

2. Appearance and feel:

OPP: Smooth to the touch, translucent when not dyed, with high transparency.

PET: has the best performance in terms of transparency, good stiffness, and easy visual recognition.

3. Density and sound:

OPP: Less dense than water, so it floats on water. When shaking, the film will make a dull sound.

PET: Denser than water, so it sinks in water. When shaken, the film will make a crisp sound.

4. Material and performance:

OPP: colorless, odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. It is a material with high strength, high impact strength, high rigidity, toughness and good transparency.

PET: Excellent in physical properties, chemical properties and dimensional stability, as well as good transparency and recyclability.

5. Other methods:

Chemical testing: Using specific chemical reagents or solutions and observing their reaction with both membranes, OPP and PET can be further differentiated.

Tensile test: Since the tensile properties of the two materials are different, they can also be distinguished by tensile testing.

Professional instruments: Using professional instruments such as infrared spectrometers and mass spectrometers, OPP and PET films can be distinguished more accurately.

To sum up, whether it is through burning, observing appearance, measuring density and sound, or using other chemical or physical methods, OPP and PET films can be effectively distinguished.
